What we do
The mission of the Weller Health Education Center is to measurably improve children's lives by giving students the tools they need to make informed and healthy life choices. To accomplish this, each year the Center partners with more than 500 schools to supplement and enhance the teaching of health, character education and life science for students grades K through 12. The Center was the first not-for-profit health promotion, disease prevention education facility of its kind in Pennsylvania. Serving more than 1.2 million children since our inception in 1982, the Weller Center remains the only such center in our 39-county service area and one of just 34 health education centers across the nation.
What makes us different?
The Weller Center takes preventive health education to a level above what classroom teachers can provide. Specifically, we offer more than 30 programs and assemblies in nutrition and fitness, drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention, reproductive health, character education and violence prevention and human anatomy and biology. All programs are designed to meet state department of education academic standards and are delivered by specially trained health educators who hold master's degrees in public health, health education or related fields. These health educators use lifelike teaching models, state-of-the-art exhibits, high-impact multimedia, and targeted student interaction and activities to translate complex health information into easy-to-understand concepts. Programs are delivered either at the school, or classes may travel to the Weller Center's facility in Easton.
In addition to student programs, we also provide a multitude of wraparound resources including enrichment activities and lesson plans to implement in the classroom before and after our program, access to an online question and answer forum where students can anonymously continue to ask our health educators questions, and the ability to utilize our comprehensive online health resource libraries. Professional development workshops for teachers and educational programs for parents are also available in each topic area. All programs are customized to best address the specific needs of each school we serve.
