AETNA FOUNDATION FUNDS NUTRITION PROGRAMS IN THE ALLENTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT

(LEHIGH VALLEY, PA) The Weller Health Education Center received a $30,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation to provide children in the Lehigh Valley with dynamic obesity education programs. The grant will support the delivery of the Center's unique preventive health education programs, Kids in Motion and Food and Fitness for Life to more than 2,700 second and fourth grade students in the Allentown School District. The programs are designed to review the importance of exercise and nutrition.

During Kids in Motion, second grade students will "get moving" and learn the fundamentals of exercise while getting a real workout. Food and Fitness for Life will teach fourth grade students how to best meet their dietary and caloric needs for the day. A food trivia game reinforces the importance of healthy food choices. In addition to funding programming for students, the Allentown School District will hold community nights in the spring to promote health and wellness for the entire family.

The Weller Center is one of only five Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations to receive a grant from the Aetna Foundation this year. The independent charitable and philanthropic arm of Aetna Inc., the Aetna Foundation awarded $2.9 million for philanthropic initiatives focused on depression, childhood health and end-of-life care.

"Childhood obesity is a major health problem affecting all of our communities," said Patrick Young, President of Small Business and Middle Market operations for Aetna in Pennsylvania. "Aetna is pleased to be able to benefit such a worthwhile health education program."

"We're thrilled to partner with Aetna and grateful for their commitment to preventive health education for kids," said Melissa Lee, President and CEO of the Weller Health Education Center. "Our partnership with Aetna will help us reach thousands of students with potentially life-saving information on how to make smart and healthy life choices," she added.

Representatives from the media are invited and encouraged to attend a session of programs at Muhlenberg Elementary School (740 North 21st Street, Allentown) on February 7, 2007. Programs will begin as follows and last 45-minutes in length. Kids in Motion-12:55 p.m. and Food and Fitness for Life-1:45 p.m.
